Don’t miss this Colourful Montessori Activity for Preschoolers at home or at school!

Using a montessori activity involves making sure the child is learning through their own play.

This is especially important for preschoolers (although just as much for other ages!) because they are coming into the time when they are more able to use fine motor skills, but also not too adventurous yet - mostly!

This age group need varying activities simply because they can be hard to engage for long, but also function well with routine, structure and familiar play as they can access it.

In this post I’ll share four different variations of this montessori activity using the same basic material: pom poms.

For each of these activities, you will need these basic materials:

  • A bunch of colourful pom poms of various sizes

  • A tray or space to play with these pom poms (I find one with sides helpful so they don't roll away)

  • A pair of tongs or children's big tweezers

  • Some containers of your choosing

Firstly, use pom poms to learn about colour matching!

Set up the containers, one for each colour. Put a small pom pom from each colour into a separate container. Then, tip out all the coloured pom poms.

Object: Child can match different colours by adding the correct coloured pom poms to the right containers.

Make it harder:

  • Use the tongs or tweezers to manipulate the pom poms (more involved)

  • Use 5 + colours (more involved)

Watch it on Youtube here!

2: Use a basic of any Montessori activity - scooping, manipulating or carrying - to organise the pom poms.

We often use tip trucks or front end loaders to move the pom poms around. Why not make a pile here or there?

You and your child can create a whole set of activities for 3 year olds at home, out of moving pom poms. Here are some ideas:

  • Pom poms are rocks in the Zoo

  • They can be animals in the farm

  • Construction site-need I say more?

  • Using them to build a 'wall' of colour for people to jump over (think teddies), or

  • Setting them up in a line for a racetrack for cars!

The activities are only limited to your imagination, Mama! Let's go!

3: Matching different sizes

The third of these fun activities for three year olds at home involves using different sized pom poms and categorising or matching them again.

Go biggest to smallest.

Make 'steps' between different sizes.

Count how many of each size you have, and bring in some simple maths.

This is a simple montessori activity which various ages can make their own.

Would this work in your house?

4: Change the activity to bring in the alphabet!

You need a set of alphabet stickers like these or make some of your own alphabet cards.

If using stickers, add them to a big piece of cardboard, leaving a bit of space in between.

Then, using your other equipment, teach your child the Alphabet song while adding a pom pom to the corresponding letters.

Object: Child learns or practices the alphabet in a fun but memorable way.

Make it harder: Give the child (if they are confident) a challenge to do the whole alphabet, or 5 letters at a time, or every second, themselves, depending on ability.

Use any or all of these 4 different activities for three year olds at home, using the simplest of materials which you MAY have hanging around.
