First up we have the incredibly hilarious and gorgeously illustrated Hairy Maclary books.

These books by Lynley Dodd have been around for years-and are best sellers.

Did you grow up with ‘Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy’ like I did?

There are many in the series now and the rhyming, illustrations and funny antics of the animals in the book are loved by children (and parents) worldwide!

Second on the list are the ‘That’s not my….’ Board books.

These books, by Fiona Watts and Rachel Wells, are also adored the world over due to their simplicity and tactile nature. They are amazing for babies right through to older preschool age.

Thirdly, an amazing Australian author takes the stage.

Alison Lester is a wonderful author and we have many of herbooks in our house, from board books to gorgeously illustrated children’sbooks.

A favourite of ours is ‘When Frank was Four’, which followsvarious children’s journeys through development until age seven or so.

However, one of my specific favourites is ‘Magic Beach, because it’s nostalgic quality and old-school childhood themes throughout the story just really hit home with the readers.

Magic Beach is about a week at the beach… but every second page is through the children’s imagination.

It is beautiful and a wonderful insight into how kids think and see their world.

I recommend you take a look here, if you don’t already own this gorgeous book.

Coming up fourth on the list of 5 best books for 0-5 year olds is the cute little Maisie Mouse series.

My kids love these books.

In fact I don’t think I have ever seen a child not be enthralled by Maisie.

The simple colours and characters go on very practical, everyday activities, which is so helpful for small children and theirunderstandings of the world.

These books have led to many a discussion in our house, about HOW people behave at the doctors, to why we should help our friends, and much more.

The words are also very simple and easy to understand, which means the child can understand them perfectly, but also has space to imagine by herself too.

These are bestsellers and have a range of titles here.

So finally, we are onto the last books in this short list.

Anyone who has been following me for awhile may have heard me speak about the fabulous book series by Trace Moroney.

The ‘When I’m Feeling ….’ books have been out for awhile, but they are timeless and SO unbelievably helpful for a child’s emotional wellbeing and intelligence, that they cannot be ignored.

They are parent-friendly and have a blurb especially for parents in the back, so you KNOW why your child might be acting the way they do, and how to get the most out of the book.

I use these consistently with my own children and willcontinue to do so.

The ‘Feelings’ books help children actually identify WHAT afeeling ‘feels like’ and how to process that feeling. (Helpful for adults toosometimes, right?)

They do so in an easy to understand way, and therefore are, in my opinion, an ESSENTIAL in any house as a reference and to normalize ‘feelings’ for kids.

So there you have it-my list of the 5 best books for 0-5year olds!
