Why you Need this Behaviour Management Tool

Having trouble with behaviour management with your small child?

Wondering why all the other mums don't struggle with the same thing you are?

Or, thinking 'There just must be a way that we can stop this behaviour with my child. Surely!'

Don't worry, there are ways to work on your child's behaviour (many of them are in the posts of this blog, by the way). 'Behaviour management' may sound like a harsh term, but it simply means managing your child's behaviour-and I help mums to do this in a positive, connection-based way.

If you're having trouble with behaviour management and your child, you are about to find out why this tool is going to be so, so helpful!

One of the worldwide issues parents face is behaviour management. This goes for teachers, too-because of a little secret-that isn't so secret.

If kids understand the behaviour expectations and what they should be doing, they find it much easier to have fun, learn and be a child.

But how can we 'get' our kids to behave?

This is a loaded questions-and hard to answer.

Traditional, old-school parenting said 'behave or you will get .....'.

(Big on the expectations, low on the warmth at times.)

New-age, permissive parenting says 'You don't have to behave. Just be yourself.'

(Big on the warmth, low on the expectations...which is not really helpful either.)

Read more here on the different parenting styles, and you will see that the most recommended, effective way to parent is by being in the Authoritative style.

(High warmth, high but achievable expectations)

Creating an environment where our kids can thrive means we need to understand how they function and interact with the world-so we can help them learn how to become a healthy, functional and contributing member of society.

This involves positive and clear behaviour management when they are small, and helping them learn how to manage it themselves, as they grow.

Ok, so that's great. What is this behaviour management tool, then?

I've created a way for parents to actually find out what works with their child's behaviour.

The Behaviour Tracker is there so that we can take a wider view of what actually works with our child.

If your child is struggling with their emotions, or throwing things- and you just can't work out what helps?

'Follow their story' as you go through your day, and write down what you tried when you had to manage these repetitive situations.'

Then have a look back at what you tried, at the end of the week.

What worked, what didn't?

Why is this so helpful for behaviour management?

1: We can see a pattern developing

Much like standing back and looking at a big display of standing dominoes, we can see with a wider lens when we stand back from a situation.

If your child is doing something often but you aren't seeing the repetitive nature of it, you treat each small episode individually-it's so much easier and more effective to try something consistently-and creates less confusion in your child AND yourself.

2: We can often see past the behaviour and through into what is really going on for the child.

This is unbelievably important. To actually see why the child is throwing things, you might be able to see that just prior to that, her big sister takes her special toy off her. This might be a release of pent-up frustration, rather than misbehaviour-and then we can calmly deal with that situation as it arises.

It gives us a greater understanding of our child's habits and world.

Does this tracker work for any age?

Basically, yes. I created it for mums of small kids, but it should work for any age child, for the reasons mentioned above.

The Behaviour Tracker is all about helping mums (and teachers) understand their kids better, so they can help them with their behaviour in a more positive, understanding way.

I also use this in my coaching toolkit to help parents identify behaviour issues with their child in exactly the same way.
